Marc Jacobs: the designer and brand
Marc Jacobs, an eminent rule-breaker (he dared to play with the Louis Vuitton monogram), is known for his lavish, theatrical fashion shows and wearable apparel and handbags.
A New York City native, Marc Jacobs was born on April 9, 1963, and attended and graduated from Teaneck High School, while also graduating from the New York High School of Art and Design.
At age 15, Jacobs was a stockboy at Charivari, a New York City boutique. He continued his education at New York City's Parsons School of Design (now called Parsons The New School) where he won the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award in 1984. That same year, he was also awarded the Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble Award and the Design Student of the Year Award.
His fashion career got its real start while Jacobs was still at Parsons where he designed and sold his first line of hand-knit sweaters; he also designed his first collection for Reuben Thomas, Inc., while a student. In 1986, Jacobs designed his first collection and namesake label.
Following his studies, Jacobs began to design at Perry Ellis, in 1988, for whom he designed the infamous "grunge" collection, which lead to his dismissal in 1993. Ironically, in 1987, Jacobs had been awarded The Council of Fashion Designers of America Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent, making him the youngest designer to have received this honor. In 1994, Jacobs and his business partner, Robert Duffy came back with their initial launch of the Marc Jacobs signature line of womenswear.
In 1997, Jacobs was appointed Creative Director of Louis Vuitton, which he remains today. Here, he created the company's first ready-to-wear line. Also in 1997, Marc Jacobs took home yet another CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year Award, which sparked his launch of the lower-priced diffusion line, Marc by Marc Jacobs in 1998.
In 2000, Jacobs launched a Marc Jacobs handbag line and menswear line called Marc Jacobs Men for which he was awarded the CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year Award. In the years that followed, the Marc Jacobs brand has expanded into fragrances, eyewear, watches, a children's line (Little Marc) and a streetwear brand (Stinky Rat).
